Homework

Our homework program officially starts today!  Students have brought home a homework notebook that should come to school each day.  Information is inside about our weekly spelling homework, and our monthly reading log.

Spelling: Each week students will write their words in their agenda on Monday morning.  They will need to practice those words for our quiz on Friday morning.  Also, they will need to complete 3 activities of their choosing from the Spelling Choice Menu.  These activities are due each Friday morning.

Reading: Students also have a reading log in their homework notebooks.  They need to read for 15 minutes 5 times a week, and record their reading in the reading log.  Reading logs are due the last day of the month.

Also in the homework book is a fiction and nonfiction 4 in a row paper.  This is optional homework they can do if they have extra time.  If they get 4 in a row and show me something good will happen.

September Newsletter

September 2016

Hello Parents of  3E!

I would like to extend a welcome to all of our families, and particularly to those who are new to Eldorado.  I am pleased and privileged to work with your child during this school year.  The grade 3 provincial curriculum is challenging and exciting.  Through class discussions, projects, activities, experiments, large and small group lessons, your child will take part in a program that is both enriched and that focuses on the basics.  Assessment will sometimes involve peers, self, as well as the teacher.

Safety Stuff

If you have not already done so, please send both indoor and outdoor shoes for your child.  Indoor shoes are essential in order to keep our classroom and school clean.  Indoor footwear should be appropriate for participation in gym and DPA, as one of these activities will happen every day.   For obvious safety reasons, crocs or sandals are not appropriate for these activities, and depending on the nature of the activity, your child may be asked to sit out if their footwear is a safety concern .

I realize that most of you are aware of our NO NUTS policy within Peel, but it is important to keep this in mind when packing your child’s lunches as we have students with allergies in our class this year.  Nuts can sneak in to snacks such as granola bars, sometimes without us realizing it.  Checking ingredients at home would be appreciated.  Sharing of food is not encouraged.  Healthy snacks are also encouraged and there is now a new government guideline which supports healthy snacks in schools and shows how it helps our children to be more successful.  Please ensure your student has a healthy snack everyday for their morning snack.  Some examples of healthy snacks include, fruits, vegetables, yoghurt, or crackers and cheese.

Another note about food, although we love to celebrate birthdays at school, it is important to remember that bringing food in for these celebrations could be dangerous and/or exclude some of the students in our class.  If you would like to send something in instead of food feel free to send in a small token for the students such as a pencil, eraser or highlighter.

Other Stuff

Although the school provides most materials needed for classroom use, certain things are “eaten up” more quickly and need to be replenished more often.  It would be greatly appreciated if you could kindly provide a box of tissue for the class.  Other supplies that are helpful for students to have include extra pencils, a pencil sharpener, and a glue stick.  To help with cleanliness and to help stop the spread of germs in our portable please send hand sanitizer to keep in your child's desk.  Also, if you could please send a water bottle each day that your child can keep on their desks and refill throughout the day.

From time to time, I might also ask for other recycled materials from home which can be used for art, science, or other classroom activities.

   Book Orders

Many of you are familiar with Scholastic, and if you have ordered books before, you know that it is a great way to add books to your home at great prices.  Book orders will be sent home monthly and you can, if you wish, order books.  Please make any cheques payable to Scholastic Canada Ltd.   The first book order will be sent home this week .  September orders are due by  Wednesday, September 21st.

Homework

Most parents have questions about homework.   While homework is another opportunity to support your child’s learning, I believe that in order for homework to be helpful, homework must also be part of what we do in the classroom.  Your child will have homework on a regular basis (this does not necessarily mean every day) which will allow them to practise and apply classroom learning.  Homework will include work that is not completed in class, as well as spelling homework, and math problems.  Nightly reading is an ongoing expectation, and students are expected to fill out their reading log each month and bring it back to school on the stated day.

I believe that the best learning for your child happens when parents, child, and teacher work together to build success and to support goals.  I encourage you and your student to review school routines on the front pages of the agenda.  It will be your child’s responsibility to share the information, news, letters and school information with you daily.  I invite you to contact me at the school anytime with your questions, ideas, or concerns.  You can phone or write a note in your child’s agenda, whichever you find most convenient.  I am looking forward to a great year with your child and you!

Sincerely,

Mrs. de Rivera
Please write a short note in agenda to show you have read the newsletter.  Thank-you.
